expectant knitting

Let me first say that if you are one of the few crafters out there that feels guilty that they don’t ‘feel like’ knitting while they are pregnant, you are not alone.

Ever since I became a knitter I have read and heard from others the joy of conceiving and getting to knit for their little bundle while they anxiously awaited their arrival. I excitedly anticipated the day that I would get my turn at it. I casually dreamed of all the items I wanted to knit for my baby. The list grew rather large; of course a blanket,  a dress or pants, several hats for baby’s cold head, lots of socks, some stuffed toys, and on and on. One of my favorite books to peruse is The Expectant Knitter by Marie Connolly and I would lazily daydream that maybe I would spend my pregnancy knitting through it a la the movie Julie and Julia.

Discovering I was pregnant with my first child was one of those special joys that I will never forget. Elation doesn’t even come close. But soon to come was the nausea, the bloating, and my personal favorite – acid reflux. In the few days I felt well enough, I planned my baby’s first blanket. I ordered the yarn, I scanned through all my books, I made notes on the alterations I wanted to make and I got my needles ready. As soon as my yarn arrived, I wound it with extreme care, imagining how beautiful my blanket would be. I cast on, got about two inches in, and then my second trimester started. The nausea decreased but everything else got worst. My good days were fewer and farther between and very little got done. When I came home from work in the evenings all I wanted to do was lay down. Eating was not at all on my list of evening activities, let alone sitting up long enough to knit on a blanket. By the end of my second trimester I had maybe ten inches of blanket (knit in the round so it wasn’t big at all, still technically a fancy washcloth) and on top of my pregnancy symptoms I was racked with guilt for not enjoying my expectant knitting more. Did this mean I loved my little baby less? I wasn’t willing to suffer a little so that she would have sweet hand knit things for her arrival? The answer is a resounding NO of course!

My sweet little Evelyn entered my life in late December, right on her due date, but not after 36 hours of hard labor. She is perfect in every way and completely worth the nine months of acid reflux. Thankfully she has a whole cast of close friends and family that knit and crocheted for her so she was perfectly warm and cozy coming home from the hospital.

I finished my blanket by the way. Of course it was after she was born! Que Sera! She will love it none the less and I am still proud to have finished it for her.

victoria cowl

I am very excited to show off a new design.

Introducing the Victoria Cowl. I just love how this cowl sits close to the neck. It has a cabled center section with incredibly fun pleats on both the top and bottom. Knit in a DK weight yarn, this cowl works into a squishy and fun accessory! The pleats give it just enough stretch so that it fits over your head easily.

We had a fantastic time shooting the Victoria Cowl around town. A special thanks to my model, you can find her over here at Aloft Fibers.

perfect fingerless gloves

While I haven’t had much to say on here lately I really have been up to quite a lot and very busy knitting. I have a new pattern I am working on that I hope to be posting sometime soon. Until then, I want to share how in LOVE I am with the Worlds End Fingerless Gloves. This is a really great pattern. I really love the shaping incorporated into the arm and wrist sections.

I had a good friend that just fell in love with these mini skeins by Miss Babs I picked up at Stitches West this year. I really wanted to make her something but couldn’t figure out what since my yardage was a bit limited. So I did a little bit of modding to the arm section to make these shorter fingerless gloves while still maintaining that great shaping. The final product is a great looking and fitting pair of fingerless gloves. Oh, and my friend loved them!!

starburst

I have been working on a new pattern that is finally ready to be shared. Introducing the Starburst Baby Blanket!

One of my best friends was pregnant with her fourth child and when I learned it was going to be her third girl in a row, the thought of creating another pinky-feminine-little-girly blanket was a little daunting. I really wanted to make a baby blanket that would be subtly soft and feminine but a little different. A geometric pattern with lots of texture and interest seemed to be just the ticket.

So was born this geometric chart. In repetition it makes a really nice textured blanket. My finished product was a little small but perfectly child sized for carrying around. The pattern can easily be modified to be larger depending on what you individually want.

new containment units

I picked up several fantastic containment type units at Stitches West.

One word: ‘Namaste’. I know, it makes me smile too.

I have the very large and very in charge ‘Hermosa’ bag. It is fantastic for toting everything you need around. What I bought at Stitches is the ‘Zuma’ bag. I have lusted after it online for quite some time. It was nice to see it in person at Stitches. There is something so fantastic when looking at bags with being able to check out all the pockets and really see what it is all about. It is so fantastic, it convinced me I had to buy Zuma. So it came home with me.

Also in new containment units, I picked up some fantastic stitch markers with cute little tins to store them in. They are made by Miss Purl and are they ever sparkly and cute! Miss Purl is from Portland Oregon and all of her stuff was nice neat and very high quality. I am so excited to have a couple of sets from her collection.

miss babs…

'A Day at Browlers Antique Store'

Of course all of my good intentions did me very little good. I attended Stitches West with the intention and seeing and taking it all in with a little goal to not spend too much. Let me tell you first hand, this was an impossible goal. There were so many neat things to see and touch. Especially all the hand painted, hand dyed, hand spun, hand crafted yarn.

My new favorite hand dyer to add to my short list is Miss Babs. I hadn’t even heard of her before Stitches and now I see that I have been missing out. I am in LOVE with her “Yowza, What Skein!” yarn. It is a lovely worsted weight yarn that is squishy and all things comforting. And the colors she is dyeing it in are enough to take your breath away. It was so hard to choose just one but I was successful and walked away with only one skein of it. Don’t worry, I will be back. Thankfully she has a website so I will be able to continually feed my new addiction.

I also picked up a few of Miss Babs’ mini skeins called “Yummy Toes”. It is a nice heavy sock weight yarn and it came in all the fantastic color ways as the other yarns. This way, I get to play with a little more colors without buying so many full skeins. Smart right?

stitches, day 2

Most of the first day was spent wandering up and down the seamingly never-ending aisles of stuff. Today was serious. Today was all about the buying. No, not just buying, really more procuring items that needed to come home with me. Oh all the lovelies. I showed amazing restraint and swore to buy only the things that I absolutely could not live without. I promise to post photos of all the amazing stuff I “procured” later. For now, here is a photo of me with Alana of Never Not Knitting. We had a nice little chat. She really is just a sweetheart in person!
