strawberry picking

Can you believe it is Spring? We are really starting to enjoy the Spring weather here. My sweet little girl just loves being outside so as the weather warms and the flowers start waking up, we are starting to adventure out and do fun Spring-y things.

IMG_8263We recently took a little drive out to one of our favorite organic farms. Classic Organic is one of those sweet little spots in the community that almost everyone seems to know about even though there is little to no advertising. They have a lovely barn where they sell their organic produce. Everything from carrots and lettuce to eggs and honey. The just opened up a U-Pick Strawberry Field and I just couldn’t resist taking E. out there.

We packed a picnic lunch of PB&Js and juice (very gourmet, right?) and hit the road. The sun was shining and it turned out to be a perfect afternoon. After lunch we went for a walk through the field.

At first, E. was not so sure what to make of all this. But once she heard me say “bright red strawberries” enough times, she caught on. Before we knew it, we had a full basket!

Of course they are far too delicious not enjoy some right there on the spot. Yum!!

easter… just around the corner

Easter is just around the corner and I am really looking forward to it this year. My sweet E. is 1 now and will be hunting for eggs and visited by the Easter bunny for the first time. I can’t wait to experience this magical time through her eyes. Plus, I am also very ready for all things Spring.

I am not really big on dyeing eggs each year. We are organizing an egg hunt with friends this year and so I have employed plain ol’ plastic eggs to get the job done. But I just saw a post over on terrain that makes me desperately wish I had planned to dye eggs this year.

Aren’t they GORGEOUS!!

I have been seeing lost of posts out there lately with ideas for using natural dyes for your eggs. This instructional uses red cabbage as its dye but plenty of other sites have lists of ingredients you can use to get other colors. How fun is that?!?

Well, who knows, maybe my house will end up smelling like hard boiled eggs this afternoon after all…

Have a Happy and Fun Easter everyone!

vintage little sweater

It seems like I am finally getting around to taking some photos of the things I have been working on lately.

IMG_8181

I am so excited to share photos of a sweater I made for my little girl. I wanted to knit her a little sweater for her first birthday (back in December) and I did in fact finish it in time. I just never got around to taking photos of it! It was also a tad bit too big for her then and she is just starting to fit into it.

I wanted a sweater that was a little on the unisex side. I like rough and tumble type sweaters for wearing in the garden or out to the park, regardless of the fact that she is a sweet little girl. I was looking around for a pattern when I stumbled on a one-page article in Knitting Traditions Magazine about this Vintage Little Sweater. It was one of the very last pages in the magazine and it just sort of jumped out at me. The pattern was originally published in 1926 and was more of a written instruction than a simple to follow pattern. But I just loved the look of it. It was just what I had been looking for.

So I did a little stash diving and came up with a skein of Spud and Chloe Sweater that I had been gifted a while back. I got my hands on some extra (different dye lots) and started up. Of course the pattern had been written for sock weight yarn and I was using worsted so that required some changing. Then I was also changing the sizing… well by about 3 hours into trying to make a plan, I ended up just re-writting the pattern with the sizing and gauge I was looking for! The original pattern was also written to be knit flat and seemed later and I wanted a sweater that was nearly a one piece with very little seeming, another complication. Really, my sweater ended up being just inspired from the look of the original but itself a quite different pattern. Oh well! Who doesn’t want a little complication in their lives?

I am so happy with the end result. It is exactly what I had imagined. And the monster buttons are so cute and match the sweater so well. I look forward to using the heck out of this sweater in the coming months!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I am so blessed that in California this time of year, all of the hills are covered with green. Everywhere you look is stunning shades of emerald and chartreuse. Then with the little bit of added heat that hints spring is on its way, bright yellow flowers start blooming everywhere. It is hard not be enchanted by our local flora palette.

Add in the fact that St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and I am in the mood for all things Irish.

I can’t imagine anything more appealing right now than a quaint Irish cottage with a fire burning and a bundle of thick wool waiting to be knitted.

Nothing satisfy’s this urge better than flipping through images from people fortunate to have visited such a lovely place. I love seeing Ireland through Sue’s lens over at 129twigandvine. You must go check out her photos.

So as I go to daydream of Ireland, I leave you with this:

“Wishing you always,
walls for the wind, and a roof for the rain,
tea beside the fire, and the love and laughter of those you hold dear.”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

chair socks?

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/weigh-in-should-your-chairs-wear-socks-183912

So reading this morning on Apartment Therapy, Chair Socks? – I couldn’t believe it! But it does seem sort of useful… maybe a new trend for knitting for the home? Should we all commence knitting socks for our chairs?

This may be a fun way to use up remnant sock yarn. I think I would like to see them in a bright color to mimic the “dipped” look that is so popular right now.

Happy Halloween!!

Our family loves Halloween. We love dressing up in costume and entertaining kids. We aren’t the horror version of Halloween, we are the happy and playful version. So I have been looking forward to this first Halloween with my daughter since about the moment after she was born. I flopped back and forth all summer about what kind of costume to make her and what she should dress up as. Then back in July she pretty much decided for me. My then 7 month old, for no apparent reason, would tilt her head back towards the sky, pucker her lips, and make little hooting sounds like an owl. I have no idea where she learned to do that, neither one of us was doing it. So in her own infant words, she said “mommy, I want to be an owl for halloween”. Decided.

I honestly did not start work on her costume until well after the first of October. I was buried too deeply in baby gift knitting that had to take priority because of those pesky shower deadlines. I had a general idea of where to head on the construction plus I found lots of inspiration out there on the web. I am also not a great seamstress so all of my sewing projects have to be far simplified which dictated how complicated the work would be.

I started out with some basic materials: a brown long sleeve onesie and some cute striped pants, both were found at Babys-R-Us. I had intended to make an owl hat but I saw this one at a grocery store and just fell in love. Plus Evie did not pull it off when I tried it on her. I am a firm believer that any hat she WON’T pull off is meant to be. Then I headed to the craft store where I acquired some fabric and brown thread for body and wings.

Oh! and of course my trusty pinking shears!! Completely key!

I started off with the onesie laid out and some trace paper to make a pattern for the chest. I traced the outline of the onesie then did layers of paper that would overlap and have fun little “feathers” dangling from them.

Next I used these trace sheets to cut out my wavy fabric.

I pinned and sewed on all three layers, one at a time, to the onesie. I think it looks like a little flapper version of an owl the way the fabric hangs.

Ok, now for the wings. I really struggled with how I wanted to make wings for this costume. There are basically two ways to tackle them: 1) wings that lay long along the arm and are tied down with some sort of wrist band or elastic OR 2) wings that resemble sort of a cape that is attached to the back of the costume. I really thought I was going to go route 1 but when I was trying to draw out patterns for the wings I was really unhappy with how it was coming together. So I switched to option 2.

Again, I laid out the onesie and traced out the shape of a cape that would attache to its back.

I cut out a whole bunch of little feather pieces. I am not sure why I chose to do these as individual feathers here instead of sheets like the body. I think it looks thicker which I wanted for the wings.

After many layers of feathers, and a whole lot of cutting, I topstitched a brown piece of fabric to the back of the wing (I cut it out at the same time as the yellow piece so that they would line up exactly) to hide all the ugly stitching. Your stitching may not be ugly, but make no mistake, I am an amateur and my stitches are always ugly.

Next I sewed the wing cape thing to the back of the onesie, along the shoulders and neck. I had originally intended to also stitch the edge along the back of the arms but it turns out my sewing machine (and probably yours) would not let me slide the 9 month old sleeve onto it. Bummer! So I ended up hand sewing that part. This was probably the most difficult part of the entire construction. Darn those little sleeves are not very big around at all!

I chose to lay my wing cape so that the fancy feathers are facing forward. While this means you don’t see them as well, I like the way it looks when my little owl flaps her arms around. From the back, all you see is solid brown.

And voila! Now you have a cute little owl costume. My owl will be wearing brown socks to cover her tootsies and her sweet owl hat to complete the ensemble. Isn’t she just about the cutest thing you ever did see!?! I am darn proud of how this turned out.

awesome yarn bombing

I ran into this the other day in the great wide internet and thought it was AWESOME! I mean seriously, here is one very cool knitter who deserves some worship. Not only does it make a boring concrete thing far more attractive but it is bringing joy to children and star wars lovers of all ages. Who doesn’t love this little droid?

Nice job Sarah Rudder!
